Lavender

Spotify Lyric experience

Lavender Spotify Lyric experience was also a schoolproject. The goal is to listen to the song, identify the emotions and understand the underlying meaning to create a design for the words so that they completely align with the spirit of the song. I chose the song Lavender by REHMA. She is a fairly new & unknown singer that just started out.

The meaning of the song

REHMA sings about wanting to do a lot in her life, but she feels tied down by the demands that society imposes and expects her to do. She dreams in Lavender about a Rehma who does what she dreams of , at her own pace while sighingly living the standard cycle of her life, but she fights, so that one day her dreams will not be just dreams.

The proccess

The first step was to listen to the song and to find images on the internet that fit the aesthetic and the meaning of the song. This helps to give and maybe recognise emotions in the pictures you find. I put the picture in the middle and answered a few questions to really unravel the meaning.

brainstorm brainstorm

After that I was looking for inspiration on pinterest for different ways to potray the fonts of the lyrics. The following thing I did was to try to sketch some fonts. Some were styles I randomly thought of that fit into the emotions of the song. Before I did this step, I noticed the song needed flowly lines (connected typography) cause it is so peaceful and dreamy but also has a strong statement about not liking the way society works cause you need to follow the cycle that you might don't wanna be chained too.

The Logo

I made three versions of the title of the song. The first one (left) and the second (right) were very simple and this was the font I chose when I only focused on the peacefull mood the song brought to me, this was my first version before I went back and realised the meaning has a strong stamement. So I made the third one, this one is split in two sides, the right side is white and dreamy, cause she sings about wanting to follow her dreams and have them become a reality, but the left side is how she feels cause of how society wants us to be, she feels chained to the things that seem obligated that she feels like she is not free enough to follow her dreams by the standards that are held up. I changed the font with some feedback, the thin lines were too soft for this song and the harsh paintdesign makes it a little more powerfull. The following paragraphs will continue the heading of "The Process".

version 3

I put the lyrics of the song on a still image, instead of putting a lyric in a straight ine to represent the flowly feeling of the song. But also making it look a little more difficult but readable and the ripped page which represents the meaning of the song.

still lyrics

And here comes the end result, the video that supports the Lyric Experience. I used the moving lines to mimic what I did in the still image. The background also support the meaning: ripped pages, dreamer backgrounds and background that show a contrast. Enjoy!
